What to expect - Acupuncture, The Traditional Diagnosis

The first consultation takes between 1 to 1½ hours, thereafter 30-45 minutes. In order to form a picture of your situation I will ask questions concerning your past and present medical history and important life events. Your work, relationships, family history, religion/spiritual connection, hobbies and how you see yourself all give me an impression which I translate into a 5 element acupuncture diagnosis.

This picture not only helps me to find the cause of the problem, but gives me an idea of the strength of your constitution and the prognosis of the dis-ease.

Using diagnostic tools specific to chinese medicine I am able to ascertain the balance of your "energetic body" and with fine (disposable) needles, make the necessary corrections by using selected acupuncture points.

The needles are very rarely left in and do not hurt on insertion.

After treatment you will have a general feeling of well-being. It is a very common experience that people seeking treatment for a specific problem find that acupuncture brings improvement in many aspects of their life. Eg. mood and energy levels improve, sleep is better, weight loss or gain is easier to attain, less susceptibility to colds and flu, pain reduction and general improvement of the immune system.

Diagnostic Tools in Acupuncture

In order to develop an accurate picture of your whole being, the practitioner examines you, using the traditional Chinese method, called the Five Examinations:

  • Asking
  • observing
  • listening
  • touching
  • smelling

Every gesture, word and attribute provides clues to a person's health and well-being.

Asking:Taking your history
ObservationPhysical; The tongue, body structure, complexion and facial colour
Emotional;Assess the balance of the 5 natural emotions (joy, compassion, grief, fear, anger)
Spirit; Are you able to unfold your potential, do you feel connected, do you have a vision for your life, do you have satisfying relationships, do you feel at peace ...
Listen:Sound of the voice
Touch:Palpating the 12 chinese pulses, abdominal palpation
Smell:subtle body odours

Once the underlying cause has been diagnosed, treatment is focused on removing it at the root. By treating the cause of an illness the symptoms resolve themselves. The whole system is strengthened and general health improves.
